Volunteer: Louisiana Volunteers in Action (LAVA)

Louisiana Volunteers in Action (LAVA) is Louisiana’s approach to the federally mandated Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals (ESAR-VHP). The ESAR-VHP Program helps states to develop standardized programs for registering volunteer health professionals in advance of an emergency or disaster. LAVA is funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health and Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Cooperative Agreement.

The Louisiana Department of Health created LAVA in response to the tens of thousands of individuals, ready and willing to help after the September 11th terrorist attacks (2001) and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (2005). The number of volunteers created a large quantity of spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers, which resulted in the creation of LAVA.  The LAVA System launched December 17, 2007, is the web-based registry to credential volunteers prior to an emergency or disaster. It also serves as a mechanism to recruit, notify, manage, train, and deploy volunteers for assisting the state in meeting health/medical surge needs during an emergency.

LAVA provides a systematic way of coordinating volunteer efforts during an emergency with a special emphasis on advanced credential verification and deployment based on skill set. It ensures that Louisiana has a competent volunteer workforce who is ready for deployment.

Under the direction of LDH’s Volunteer Management Program (located at the Bureau of Community Preparedness), volunteers are deployed when needed. LAVA seeks professionals in the medical field as well as professionals with other skill sets that will prove to be helpful in the event of an emergency.

The Volunteer Management Program currently serves 8,256 persons who are registered in the LAVA system and represent 9 regional areas. These volunteers assist in responding to various events throughout the state that include but are not limited to man-made disasters (chemical, nuclear, or explosives), public health threats (disease outbreaks, wildfires, etc.), natural disasters (flooding, hurricanes, tornados, etc.), and terrorist attacks.

Any resident of the state of Louisiana, age 18 or older is eligible to register as a volunteer through LAVA (https://www.lava.dhh.louisiana.gov). Persons under the age of 18 may volunteer by providing a written consent statement signed by their parent or guardian. The minor must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of their volunteer assignment.

Volunteer: Prisoner Visitation and Support - FCC Oakdale

Prisoner Visitation and Support (PVS) is the only organization authorized by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Defense to visit any prisoner in the Federal and Military prison systems. The primary focus is on seeing those prisoners with an acute need for human contact -- those prisoners without regular visits, those serving long sentences who are far from home, those in solitary confinement and on death row, and those who are frequently transferred from prison to prison. PVS visitors let the prisoners set the agenda for what they discuss

This listing is for volunteers that are interested in visiting at FCC Oakdale, a federal correctional complex serving male offenders in Oakdale, Louisiana.

Volunteer: Staring Lane Thrift Store Angels

In 1963, the Society opened the first St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store/Distribution Center to assist the poor of our community. Our stores provide more than just a place where customers can purchase items at bargain basement prices. Through our St. Vincent de Paul Conferences, we also provide clothing, bedding, appliances, furniture and household items free of charge to those in need. Any revenues generated by our stores are put back into our programs to assist the needy.

Volunteers are a critical part of our store operations. Volunteers can assist St. Vincent de Paul tremendously by sorting through and organizing donated items which will enhance the processing and ultimate sale of donated items. Donated items may originate at our Distribution Center or at one of our thrift stores, thus the need to have volunteers sort and organize items at both locations.

Do you love to organize? Won't you be an angel and assist us at the St. Vincent de Paul Staring Lane Thrift Store. Your assistance will benefit St. Vincent de Paul by allowing us to provide critical services to some of the most vulnerable members of our dear community! We can't wait to see you!!!

Volunteer: Hammond Thrift Store Angels

Vincent de Paul Hammond Thrift Store. Your assistance will benefit St. Vincent de Paul by allowing us to provide critical services to some of the most vulnerable members of our dear community! We can't wait to see you!!!

Volunteer: Day Shelter Manna Giver

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT VOLUNTEERING TO BE A MANNA GIVER MEANS THAT YOU WILL PURCHASE OR PREPARE A MEAL AND DELIVER IT TO THE GUESTS IN THE SHELTER.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE REMINDER THAT WILL BE SENT VIA EMAIL FIVE DAYS BEFORE YOUR SERVING DATE TO ALERT YOU REGARDING THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS CURRENTLY IN THE SHELTER.

The Day Shelter of St. Vincent de Paul located at 1623 Convention Street in Baton Rouge is where the women, men and children that sleep in the Sweet Dreams and Sweet Dreams Expansion Shelters of St. Vincent de Paul at night go during the daytime hours.

Guests learn life skills like money management, how to prepare for a job interview, computer skills to seek employment online, healthy living tips, etc. They break for lunch; and, most often a hot meal is delivered form the Dining Room to the guests in the Day Shelter. Sometimes we are blessed to have a Manna Giver prepare a meal at home (or purchase a meal) and bring it to the guests in the Day Shelter. This is such a blessing to St. Vincent de Paul because the money saved by a Manna Giver providing a meal can be used for other important things.

We ask that the meal include a meat or protein, vegetable and a starch. Desserts and beverages are optional and we provide the paper goods. We encourage you to stay and serve the meal to the guests and have fellowship with them. If you choose to do this, please bring enough food for your volunteers to enjoy as well.

Volunteer: Bags of Hope

St. Vincent de Paul distributes "Bags of Hope" to people in need 365 days a year. Guests take a bag as they exit our Dining Room after having lunch. We serve lunch to an average of 250 guests daily at St. Vincent de Paul.  For most guests, the "Bag of Hope" is their evening meal.

We make these bags on Monday's, Thursday's and Saturday's from 8:30 AM until 10:30 AM in the Dining Room of St. Vincent de Paul located at 220 St. Vincent de Paul Place. We would like to have 10 volunteers on Monday's and 20 volunteers on Thursday's and Saturday's to assist in making the bags. Children that are at least six years old are welcome to be "Bags of Hope" volunteers as long as they are accompanied by an adult.  A MINOR VOLUNTEER WAIVER IS LINKED TO THIS SIGN UP THAT YOU MUST PRINT OUT, SIGN AND BRING WITH YOU WHEN YOU COME TO VOLUNTEER.

As a "Bags of Hope" volunteer, you might make sandwiches or you might break large bags of items down into smaller portions in Ziploc bags. The bags contain a beverage, peanut butter crackers, a granola or breakfast bar, and a piece of fresh fruit. Most of the items contained in the bags have been donated to us.

St. Vincent de Paul purchases the meat and condiment packets or peanut butter and jelly used for the sandwiches. If you are able to bring enough of these supplies to make 250 sandwiches, we would be most grateful. The money we save from not having to purchase the supplies can be used for other wonderful things for those we serve. This is certainly not mandatory, but if you are able to assist in this way, we would be most grateful.

The Louisiana Red Cross communications team shows the public how Red Crossers make a difference in their communities and how anyone can get involved to support the mission. We have several volunteer positions open -- on the front lines and behind the scenes -- as we focus on writing stories, producing videos, taking pictures, talking with media outlets, and sharing our stories on social media.

Fund Development:
On average, the American Red Cross responds to approximately 64,000 disasters a year. Of these, about 50,000 are single and multi-family fires and other localized events. Some clients have lost everything and need a place to stay, spiritual care, financial assistance, among many other resources. Without the generosity of our donors, we would not have these resources available. Volunteers on this team will assist in grant writing and helping us thank our donors.

Operations:
Assist in the administrative activities of American Red Cross operations department. Volunteers in this role help the Operations Team maintain the fleet and facilities for the American Red Cross of Louisiana.

To apply, please go to RedCross.org/Louisiana or e-mail LouisianaVolServices@redcross.org

Agency: American Red Cross

Disaster Cycle Services:
On average, the American Red Cross responds to approximately 64,000 disasters a year, with about 50,000 being single and multi-family fires and other localized events. These incidents are attended to by the Red Cross Disaster Action Teams (DAT), who offer immediate assistance to victims, predominantly those affected by house fires, providing essential resources like shelter, food, and clothing, as well as emotional support.
In recovery, volunteers assist clients and their families in navigating the process of finding a "new normal" after a disaster, often involving the loss of everything, and requiring assistance such as spiritual care and financial aid. We invite you to join our Disaster Action Team in Louisiana and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by disasters.
In preparedness, volunteers save lives and prevent injuries by providing free education to community members by working with paid and volunteer staff and following program guidance.

Service To The Armed Forces:
The Red Cross helps members of the military, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to, the challenges of military service. We, alongside our volunteers, provide home comforts and critical services on bases and in military hospitals around the world, support military families during deployments and emergencies, and continue serving our nation’s veterans after their service ends.

Volunteer Services:
The role involves specializing in Youth Engagement, Group Partnerships, Individual Recruitment, or Intake Process, and assisting in the implementation of the regional volunteer recruitment plan. This includes performing various volunteer recruitment activities aimed at attracting a skilled, talented, and diverse workforce to serve in all lines of business within the organization.

Volunteer: Rebuild Volunteer

Volunteer with lowernine.org! We need your help to rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans! We are always looking for individuals to join our volunteer construction crew and work on residential construction projects in the Lower Ninth Ward under skilled supervision. We welcome all willing and able individuals regardless of skill level throughout the year. We provide the necessary project training, tools, and safety equipment. You must have an up-to-date tetanus shot and active health insurance, and should consult with your physician if you have asthma or any known mold or dust allergies. The work we do is physically demanding. Individuals will join an international team, which works from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Tuesday - Saturday on our open construction projects in the Lower Ninth Ward. We expect all volunteers staying in our volunteer house to commit to this schedule full-time. The vast majority of the time, we work on residential building projects for individual pre-Katrina residents of our neighborhood, but we occasionally take on lot clearing, data collection, or collaboration with other nonprofits in the area. Please be sure to let us know if you have any specific rebuild-related skills or previous experience. We will do all we can to make the most of your skills, but as our project schedules are determined by many variables, we can't make guarantees. Our most common volunteer projects are framing, insulating, sheetrocking, tiling, painting and siding. We cannot tell you ahead of time what you will be doing, but all our projects are guaranteed to contribute in some way to the rebuild efforts of our neighborhood. Logistics: There is a program fee -- our volunteer coordinator will reach out with more information! In order to participate in rebuild projects, volunteers should commit to a minimum of two full days of work. We will arrange half-day or weekend projects for large groups whenever possible. Groups with members under the age of 18 will need one legal adult chaperone (over the age of 23) for each five minors. Volunteers under the age of 14 can only participate on rebuild projects alongside their families and not as members of larger groups. Individuals and small groups are invited to stay in our volunteer house. Groups larger than 12 will need to arrange their own housing and we can provide some contact information for local options as needed. Volunteers are allowed to stay elsewhere and commute to the house for work, but long-term non-local volunteers are highly encouraged to live in our volunteer house. We ask a $150/week housing fee for the first 3 weeks, and $50/week for each week thereafter for up to 3 months, after which point the weekly fee will be waived completely.

Volunteer: Plank Road Thrift Store Angels

Vincent de Paul Plank Road Thrift Store. Your assistance will benefit St. Vincent de Paul by allowing us to provide critical services to some of the most vulnerable members of our dear community! We can't wait to see you!!!

Volunteer: Mentor Youth with Cornerstone Kids

Want to make a difference in a child's life? Become a mentor with Cornerstone Kids! Mentors in this program work one on one with children of incarcerated parents and at-risk youth to provide a positive role model and trusted adult in the child's life.

Catholic Charities' Cornerstone Builders programs seeks mentors for children (ages 9-17) for children of incarcerated parents and at-risk youth. Cornerstone Kids mentoring is a year-long commitment of at least 8 hours per month at your convenience/ the convenience of the mentee and their family. Mentors do not have to be Catholic and may also indicate a preferred age range for their mentee, though most mentees are pre-teen to teen age range. Mentor will spend time with mentees doing activities chosen by the mentor/mentee...anything from simply getting an ice cream cone or playing board games, to trips to the zoo, museums, or sporting events. There will also be program sponsored events to meet other mentor/mentee pairs and participate in group activities. Currently, much mentor/mentee activity is virtual, however, socially distanced activities can occur. Mentors must have a desire to help children, to be able to listen, and be open to dealing with children dealing with difficulties in their home life.

More Details: While our Cornerstone Builders program helps formerly incarcerated persons, we also recognize that children with incarcerated parents need positive, present role models, and that’s why we provide mentors to Cornerstone children. Children with incarcerated parents are six times more likely than other children to become incarcerated without positive intervention. Mentors must complete a safe environment training, two background checks, a mentor interview, and mentor training.
