Description-

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans (CCANO) is seeking a creative, self-motivated, and detail-orientated intern.  This intern will learn skills and implementing strategies to research grant opportunities, organize grant deadlines, develop grant writing strategies/develop and organize conceptual frameworks for each of CCANO’s grant-seeking programs, and apply to grants.

Commitment-

The start and end date will be determined once you have been accepted, but the dates are negotiable. Typically all internships are around 3-4 months and require at least 10 hours of work per week, though a longer commitment is welcomed and encouraged.

Compensation-

This is an unpaid internship, but is a fantastic way to gain experience working in the nonprofit sector. As an alternative, we are glad to give academic credit to those eligible – please let us know when applying if this is something you are interested in. This internship is also eligible for those looking to work remotely.

Catholic Charities' Food for Seniors program is in need of volunteers to assist in packing boxes of non-perishable foods for distribution to income eligible senior citizens in our community. 

Volunteers will be helping to pack food boxes, make boxes and move and stack boxes. Volunteers should be ready to stand, move and lift throughout their shift.

Catholic Charities’ Food for Seniors program seeks a Nutrition Education Volunteer for support of their program. Food for Seniors provides monthly food boxes of non-perishable items to people age 60 + years who qualify based on their income. We serve over 30,000 seniors throughout the state of Louisiana.

The Nutrition Education Volunteer is a small, project based volunteer position. The volunteer will work to provide relatable nutrition education handouts for program participants. The volunteer will create 2 – 3 (or more!) printable materials for distribution to clients discussing a variety of nutrition and health related topics. This information should be relatable and easily understood by the program participants and cover topics such as: nutritious ways to use the provided foods, the importance of a healthy diet to overall health, the importance of health care, nutritional values of food, ways to serve special nutritional needs of participants.

This volunteer position is required to be filled by a professional nutritionist or dietician. It can also be completed by a college or graduate student studying to become a nutritionist or dietician.

This position can be completed remotely.

Catholic Charities' Refugee Services program is in need of volunteers to lead cultural orientations for newly arrived refugee clients. The volunteers will teach clients about life in the United States and cultural norms from a prepared slideshow. A great way to connect to the refugee community!

The orientations will happen once a week for 3 hours during the 9am-5pm time frame for the duration of one month. Day of the week will be Monday - Friday but is flexible.

Feeling crafty? Volunteers needed to knit or crochet baby blankets, hats, and booties for new babies at Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans' ACCESS Pregnancy Clinic and Diaper Bank. Items will be distributed to families in need of assistance with their newborn. Pastel colors preferred. Let your creativity reign!

Immigration and Refugee Services is in need of volunteers who speak Spanish to support reception at our St. Lawrence office located in Metairie. We are looking for volunteers who can can commit to a weekly volunteer opportunity for ideally 4 hours at a minimum. Reception is in need of this support Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Tasks include answering the phone, recording data about the calls, filing, and welcoming clients to their appointments. Note this is an in person volunteer opportunity with a face mask required.

Catholic Charities Immigrant and Refugee Services’ Family Literacy Program is an initiative through its education department. This program offers comprehensive English language, academic, tutoring, and civic/community services for immigrant and refugee families in the New Orleans community. We are seeking reliable, passionate volunteers to help support this program. Volunteers work primarily as tutors, working one-on-one or in small groups to help our clients with academic, English-language, workforce, or Citizenship services. This volunteer position provides an excellent way to connect with our migrant community in a more individual, personal, and friendly manner.

Where/When: Currently being held online, volunteers are asked to commit to one of the following time slots per week: Tuesdays and Thurdays - 11 am - 12:30 pm or 2 pm - 3:30 pm, or Wednesdays from 5 pm - 6:30 pm.

Catholic Charities' ESL program is looking for people to teach adult ESL classes. co-teachers for classes, and ESL tutors/small group leaders who are able to commit once a week for 1.5 hrs for a minimum of 4- 5 months. These classes are currently being held online, but will eventually transition back to in person when safe.

The ESL program holds trainings virtually a few times a month to on-board new volunteers, and you will need to attend two of those before you begin, as well as fill out onboarding paperwork.

Volunteers do not need any prior teaching experience, ESL experience or knowledge of a language other than English and will be trained for their position.

Classes are held on weekdays in the following shifts:

9 am - 10:15 am
10:30 am - 11:45 am
6 pm - 7:15 pm
7:30 pm - 8:45 pm

We are seeking reliable, passionate volunteers to support non-native English speakers in the Greater New Orleans area studying for the naturalization exam. Volunteers work primarily as teaching assistants and tutors in our citizenship classes, with a focus on English conversation practice, the 100 civics questions for the naturalization test, questions from the application for naturalization, and conducting mock interviews with students.

Classes occur Monday-Thursday from 6pm to 8:30pm, currently offered virtually. Volunteers are asked to commit to one class a week for a minimum of 3 months with the program. Once safe to do so, classes will be offered at the North Kenner Library.

It is not required, but is helpful, to speak a language other than English. We provide a basic ESL and Citizenship training and will provide ongoing professional development opportunities for volunteers. Want to make a difference in a child's life? Become a mentor with Cornerstone Kids! Mentors in this program work one on one with children of incarcerated parents and at-risk youth to provide a positive role model and trusted adult in the child's life.

Catholic Charities' Cornerstone Builders programs seeks mentors for children (ages 9-17) for children of incarcerated parents and at-risk youth. Cornerstone Kids mentoring is a year-long commitment of at least 8 hours per month at your convenience/ the convenience of the mentee and their family. Mentors do not have to be Catholic and may also indicate a preferred age range for their mentee, though most mentees are pre-teen to teen age range. Mentor will spend time with mentees doing activities chosen by the mentor/mentee...anything from simply getting an ice cream cone or playing board games, to trips to the zoo, museums, or sporting events. There will also be program sponsored events to meet other mentor/mentee pairs and participate in group activities. Currently, much mentor/mentee activity is virtual, however, socially distanced activities can occur. Mentors must have a desire to help children, to be able to listen, and be open to dealing with children dealing with difficulties in their home life.

More Details: While our Cornerstone Builders program helps formerly incarcerated persons, we also recognize that children with incarcerated parents need positive, present role models, and that’s why we provide mentors to Cornerstone children. Children with incarcerated parents are six times more likely than other children to become incarcerated without positive intervention. Mentors must complete a safe environment training, two background checks, a mentor interview, and mentor training.
