Join Inspiration Nation--Volunteer for the Girls on the Run 5k in Baton Rouge

On Sunday, May 6 the Girls on the Run 5k is the culmination of our spring programming when the girls and hundreds of other community participants from the Greater Baton Rouge and Northshore areas are cheered across the finish line and congratulated for meeting their personal and physical goals. The event takes a great deal of volunteer power to complete. We seek volunteers in the following areas: Inspiration Village pre-5k activities, registration and packet pick up, water stations, general set up, food distribution, clean up, and more! Construction

This is an opportunity to serve a low-income family, elderly or disabled person in Tangipahoa or Livingston Parish, just an hour north of New Orleans and 30-45 minutes east of Baton Rouge. You may find yourself helping build a new house, repairing a flooded house, improving a home that has fallen into disrepair or building a wheelchair ramp! You do not need any particular skills, just a "willing to help" attitude and a desire to give someone a hand-up instead of a hand-out. We will supply a construction supervisor who shows you what to do and the tools to get the job done. We typically work Monday-Friday from 8am - 4pm. Design Volunteer

The ReStore Mission Wall Project The Design Volunteer is to create mission walls to highlight Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge’s work, and impact in the community through visually creative approaches and displays that will be installed in ReStore North. There is a total of five walls that need to be created into mission walls. The mission walls are to be innovative, environmentally conscious, and made from materials found in the ReStore. The Design Volunteer will also lead the construction of the mission walls along with Habitat for Humanity volunteers, partner families, and staff. The Mission Wall Criteria The design aesthetic must include a cohesive design theme and color scheme that incorporates Habitat for Humanity’s logo, organizational colors, and mission statement. The mission walls must display photographs of Habitat partner families, volunteers, staff, donors, customers, and project sites. Design Volunteer Responsibilities Include Being responsible for the creation, layout, and design of the mission walls. This project is independently lead, but all pictures, paint colors, and materials must be approved by the Executive Director and ReStore Manager before being finalized. Meet regularly or as needed with Habitat staff about the progression of project and is responsible for planning and executing presentations on the development of the project. Mission Walls Construction Location The Design Volunteer will be responsible along with Habitat staff for leading, instructing, and helping the volunteers in the construction of the mission walls. ReStore North location: 4301 Airline Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70805 Applicant Qualifications and Skills Self-motivated, proactive, and works well independently. Project management skills and is able to help lead a team of volunteers. Ability to meet deadlines. Excellent sense of layout and design. Is creative and loves DIY projects. Pays great attention to detail. Knowledge of home décor, building materials, or hardware is helpful. She wanted to find a way to help bring Muslim women together to find a safe space to heal. The experience led her to start (IM)WISE, a nonprofit organization and grassroots movement supporting Muslim women’s empowerment through self-defense and skills-based training.

It all started in 1990 when Barbara and Ira Smith heard about a family that had fled to Massachusetts from their home in San Salvador due to violence, and were in need of furniture for their apartment. The Smiths put an ad in their church bulletin seeking donations to help the family, and received more furniture than was needed. They contacted their community’s local housing authority, to offer the extra items to its low-income clients. “We thought once all the stuff was gone, we’d be done,” said Barbara. But they were just getting started.

U.S. Army veteran OD Harris co-founded the Ready Set Go Foundation in 2014 to provide veterans and disadvantaged entrepreneurs with the tools for business success. OD was frustrated by a lack of real support and mentorship for entrepreneurs to establish their businesses. Drawing on OD’s own experience as an entrepreneur, Ready Set Go has helped more than 700 veterans and other individuals, and given out more than $1 million in financial scholarships to start-ups.
